This practice-based workshop is designed for pharmacists and pharmacy students who have an interest in or are new to the provision of consultant pharmacist services in skilled nursing facilities. It is designed to help pharmacists gain the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective consultant pharmacist. This workshop encourages participants to apply the knowledge gained in the self-study materials. In addition to reviewing the regulations pertinent to consultant pharmacy practice, faculty will assist participants as they work through "real-life" activities of the consultant pharmacist, including medication regimen reviews, preventing and correcting regulatory deficiencies, and working effectively with surveyors. Participants must have completed the self-study portion of this program, including the exam and case study, to participate in the live workshop.

The program elements include:

  • A self-study-based activity that requires the purchase of ASCP's Consultant Pharmacist Handbook
  • A live activity consisting of eight hours of interactive lecture, case studies, and role play
  • A post-activity component focusing on competencies related to consultant pharmacist services in the skilled nursing facility

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the consultant pharmacist's role in the nursing facility
  • Explain how the State Operations Manual (SOM) is used in nursing facilities
  • Explain the intent of the five major medication-related F-Tags
  • Identify which medications require a gradual dose reduction (GDR) and which medications require behavior monitoring
  • Conduct a medication regimen review (MRR), including gathering data, identifying potential and actual medication-related problems (MRPs), prioritizing MRPs, documenting the MRR, and making recommendations to other health care providers
